Gas Appliances
It is important to regularly service gas appliances. “Energy Safe Victoria and the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) recommend that all gas water heaters, space heaters and central heaters be serviced at least every two years by a registered or licensed gas fitter to ensure they are working properly and to keep your family safe.”

Gas Appliance Servicing
Gas appliances also need regular servicing:
- Burners in water heaters or space heaters can become blocked with dust or lint and then soot up the heat exchanger and flue passageways
- Air filters, air ways and fans can become blocked by lint and dust, leading to overheating and burner problems
- Safety controls can wear out and fail
Ventilation
You also need to make sure if you are installing gas appliances in your kitchen they comply with certain safety standards. Gas cookers and hotplates must have adequate clearance from combustible surfaces, for example:
- Range-hoods must be at least 600mm above the cooking appliance
- Exhaust fans must be 750mm above the appliance
- Burners must have clearances of 200mm, unless the nearby wall or surface is suitably protected”
